Amme Rock 2014

Monday, July 21st, 2014

Niisiis, kuulsin, et Vasulas (~10km Tartust) toimub tasuta muusikafestival Amme Rock. Kuulsin sellest niiviisi, et Indrek kutsuti Redneck Rampage’i kitarristi asendama ja õhtuti tehti festi jaoks proovi.

Kell 21:00 jätkas Three Leg Dog.

Kuula näiteks lugu Sick of You.

Esimene bänd Novellus tundus eelnevalt youtube’ist kuulates punk.

Äge show, lavakujundus, atmosfäär.

Amme Rock 2014

Igatahes, vahepeal jõudis Indrek kohale. Hoiatasime teda, et vahetevahel võivad alasti meessoost noormehed hüpata lavale ja hakata propellerit tegema, nagu möödunud õhtu Swamp Mine’i ajal juhtus.

Järgmiseks tuli Smashed Nail Sister, keda ma kunagi laagris olen kuulnud, ent väga ei mäletanud. Nii… ma ei tea nüüd. Ma vaatan 2009nda aasta Amme Rock’i livet ja sealt tunduvad nad päris ägedad.

Nonii. Ja kell 23 hakkas päeva peasündmus, Redneck Rampage. Mul õnnestus selleks ajaks saada ennast fotopitti, kus ma viibisin esimesed 3 lugu nagu suurte artistide puhul ikka kombeks on.

Muidugi võis põhjus olla ka selles, et neljanda loona kaverdati Lamb Of God’i lugu Redneck.

Olin neid kunagi Rock Rampil kuulnud ja no… nad on selline konkreetne eesti vanakooli rock. Täpselt selline, mida kellegi vanaisa kuulaks. Istusime ja kuulasime neid kaugemalt…

Põhimõtteliselt Kolumbus Kris oli okei. Muusika oli selline, mida võib kaugelt kuskilt kuulata. Ilmselt paljudele vanakooli austajatele meeldib rohkem jne.

Ootasime veel 1:30 algava Digital Digital‘i ära. Olin neidki varem TMW-l näinud ja DnB on selline huvitav žanr.

Igatahes, Somebitch on cool lugu.

Second semester in Master’s

Sunday, July 6th, 2014

It’s summer and I’ve successfully passed the second semester in my Master studies in Computer Science. This semester I did 33 ECTS credits worth of courses, which is 3 ECTS credits less than the previous semester. That gave me a little bit more breathing room to focus more on the interesting parts in several courses. Although at times there were still quite busy periods where I didn’t have a chance to research or do everything I wanted. Fortunately some courses allowed for a more dynamic time management and had many optional exercises.

Overall it kind of seems that I’ve taken most of the more interesting courses and now there are some not so interesting courses left. By interestingness I guess I mean the courses that actually produce a cool visible result. Of course I don’t know this until I’ve actually taken and experienced the other courses. Final cool result will hopefully be my Master’s thesis next year…

So, ok… here are some thoughts about the courses that I took this semester.

Data Mining

Because I really liked Advanced Algorithmics, I wanted something with a similar structure. Data Mining initially seemed kind of boring because of all the involved statistics and I imagined it to be like some statistics and data analysis courses in the Bachelor’s curriculum. Fortunately this was not the case at all. People who conducted it really knew how and what to present to fellow computer scientists.

Initially there were several characteristics and correlation measures covered. For example the following homework probably just looks like a bunch of random numbers and some weird plots:
http://tume-maailm.pri.ee/ylikool/DataMining/HW3/345/

Data Mining

Interesting thing here was to find and use a JS library for plot / chart rendering. Here I used flot, which is quite lightweight, but didn’t have some very necessary features like axis labels. Fortunately it did support many cool things and using it was quite easy. Also there were several plugins available.. like a one for rendering box plots:
http://tume-maailm.pri.ee/ylikool/DataMining/HW4/12/

Data Mining

One subject in data mining was data visualization. Differently plotted data may result in quite different interpretations of it. For example equal-width binning (i.e. histogram) depends greatly from the actual bin width.
http://tume-maailm.pri.ee/ylikool/DataMining/HW4/3/

Data Mining

Another cool technique is kernel density estimation that tries to guess the underlying distribution from which the data came from.
http://tume-maailm.pri.ee/ylikool/DataMining/HW4/5/

Data Mining

Characteristics of the data actually doesn’t tell much about it. To illustrate this there are some famous datasets, that have equal basic characteristics, but in reality are quite different:
http://tume-maailm.pri.ee/ylikool/DataMining/HW5/3/

Data Mining

Quite interesting subject in data mining was clustering. This will try to find objects from the dataset that are in some regard similar and group them together. There are different techniques to achieve that, here is an example with K-means clustering:
http://tume-maailm.pri.ee/ylikool/DataMining/HW6/12/
In 2-3 iterations the cluster centers will stabilize, but the result may differ depening on the starting positions of the clusters.

Data Mining

Besides these topics there were also some machine learning topics like SVM-s, self-organizing maps, hidden Markov models, neural networks. There was really quite a broad selection of topics covered and we had a chance to try out algorithms and approaches in each topic.

As a course project we did a kernel density estimation tool where users can directly manipulate the data, generate it from some common distributions and see the result of KDE with a selectable kernel function and either user-defined kernel width or Silverman’s estimation for it.
http://kde.tume-maailm.pri.ee/

Data Mining

At one point I was recommended to use highcharts to render plots. Compared to flot, highcharts is more heavy weight library and although it does support some really cool features, using it was somewhat more tedious than flot.

Still, yeah, the main aim in this course was to learn new things in a level that you would be able to explain it to others. I think this is a really good aim to have when learning something. Implementation of these kinds of online interactive tools will greatly support that aim for me.

I would say that Data Mining was the most productive course this semester.

Digital Image Processing

Now this was an intriguing course. It was based on the Digital Image Processing book by Gonzales and Woods. I was already somewhat familiar with that book, so not everything covered in this course was new to me. Still, I hadn’t actually processed most of the topics and in that regard the course was really good.

It’s kind of difficult to say what digital image processing is, but if you’ve ever wondered how Photoshop (or some other image processing software) tools are actually working underneath, then this is what this field deals with. Of course there are more topics, like automated image enhancement (in medical or satellite images), but this might not tell much to everyone. Perhaps a more common use would be automatic noise reduction in digital cameras.

This is also a topic for a more broader audience. For example an artist who wants to resize an image has an option to choose from nearest neighbour, bilinear and bicubic interpolation algorithms. It’s useful to know roughly how those algorithms work in order to pick the right one for a specific purpose.

Here is a tool that shows how nearest-neighbour compares to bilinear when up-sampling (resizing to a bigger image).
http://tume-maailm.pri.ee/ylikool/DigitalImageProcessing/HW1/

Digital Image Processing

If one grasps the idea that an image is nothing more then a big table (matrix) of numbers (pixel intensity values), then the next step would be to use some mathematical functions on those numbers in order to better the image.
http://tume-maailm.pri.ee/ylikool/DigitalImageProcessing/HW2/

Digital Image Processing

Going further, an image can also be regarded as a signal, then we can use convolution operation with another signal (a kernel) on it. This produces a wide variety of effects, for example convolution with a Laplacian kernel will find us a second derivative of the original image. Adding the second derivative will sharpen the image (this is one approach for sharpening). We can also define other kernels / filters, for example median filtering will substitute each pixel with a median from the 8-neighbourhood. This is useful in order to remove salt & pepper noise.
http://tume-maailm.pri.ee/ylikool/DigitalImageProcessing/HW3/

Digital Image Processing

Most interesting topics arise when we convert our image from the spatial domain to a frequency domain. In frequency domain we can represent the same image by a weighted combination of sine waves with different periods. Sinusoids with shorter periods represent higher frequencies in the image (local changes of intensity among pixels), sinusoids with longer periods represent lower frequencies (global gradients and even the average intensity).
There is much to talk about in this topic, but consider this… in the frequency domain, we can define some filters that keep some frequencies and disregard others. When we remove the highest frequencies, human eye can’t actually tell the difference: for an observer, it looks like the same image. In reality though we have just removed quite a lot of information. This is the main idea that JPEG compression works on.
http://tume-maailm.pri.ee/ylikool/DigitalImageProcessing/HW4/

Digital Image Processing

As you might have already noticed, from the implementations point of view, JavaScript is quite slow for image processing. Later I discovered that for the convolution one should actually go to the frequency domain and perform it there as a multiplication, rather than doing it in spatial domain. Still, with smaller images, it’s feasible to demonstrate the algorithms in a way how they are mathematically described.
For FFT in JS I used again this lib.

Overall the course was good. There were in total 4 homeworks. In each homework we also searched and read some newer scientific articles that proposed different techniques for the topics. This was quite interesting, because it gave some insight on how and why people might publish their research. We also had a course project, where I’m not quite satisfied with the result, so I’m not gonna talk about it much here.

Computer Graphics Seminar

For the continuation of the Computer Graphics course I conducted a same-themed seminar. There were no specific exercises or tasks there, but we managed to delve into many interesting topics and try them out. Each person presented some idea or researched technique to others and I usually investigated those topics after the presentations and tried them out myself too.

In the beginning I conducted some introductory lectures that described some basic ideas behind geometry and light calculations. For this I also created two demo apps that were later merged into one:
http://cgdemos.tume-maailm.pri.ee/

CG Demos

Then at some point we had 3D scans taken of ourselves and everyone had a chance to use their own pointcloud to do whatever they wanted with it. Margus provided a presentation on how to clean the data and create a 3D model from the scan. Then another student presented some non-photorealistic rendering techniques and I decided to try these out.

More information on what we did during the seminar can be found from the conclusion slides:
http://tume-maailm.pri.ee/ylikool/ComputerGraphicsSeminar/slides/Conclusion.pdf

Other

Well, I had 3 more courses, but those didn’t end in a concrete displayable result for me.

In a Data Mining Seminar I tried to classify signals read from the human scalp via a neuroheadset. The idea was cool and I got a lot of experience on what aspects arise when trying to do some machine learning on brainwave data. In the end I currently wasn’t able to get a good enough classificator and there is some further research I want to do with it…

In Concurrent Programming Languages we investigated some concurrent programming patterns and structures. Again, saw what problems arise and how to solve them. I think it’s one of those useful courses that will make you think about your program from a different perspective. I initially did plan to do some fancy project there, but because the lack of time in the end of the semester and a single person per project policy, the result I got wasn’t that noteworthy for me.

In Numerical Methods we solved math during weekends and other free days. The ideas presented in that course are really useful and I think I’ll utilize them next year, but, yeah, it was a math course. Unfortunately that meant that no actual applications or cool demos that illustrate the ideas. I really did enjoy solving math exercises together with mathematicians and other computer scientists. That’s kind of a topic on its own… both talk about the same concepts, but call them something different and think about them differently.

Conclusion

Again I had a very interesting semester. Met some new and interesting people, learnt a lot of cool stuff. I think there should be more courses that value students ability to learn new things, implement them, present them to others and succeed in teamwork. Courses like some of the best courses this and previous semester were. Then again, next year I’ll probably concentrate mostly on my Master’s thesis, so maybe I wouldn’t have time for it anymore.

To the student project competition I sent 3 projects. KDE, CG-demos and AudioViz from the previous semester. Unfortunately the competition was tough and we didn’t win any prize this time. I really like the posters though…

AudioViz Poster CG-Demos Poster KDE Poster

Here’s an awesome song for the conclusion:
